Yellow Tears

I had yellow tears last night.  Like NEON YELLOW TEARS.  I’d actually write that in yellow color but no one would be able to see it.

So I went to the eye doctor last night and told him how my left eye has been very irritable lately when I wear my contacts.  After some examination he discovered I had a minor form of giant papillary conjunctivitis.  Basically little bumps on the inside of my eyelid.  Which is why it still feels like something is still under my eyelid when I take out my contacts. He prescribes Alaway, an over the counter anti-allergy eye drop, figuring that it will go away with a week of no contact wearing and a different kind of contacts with a softer edge to them.

He also decides to look for glaucoma, which requires putting a little anesthetic on my eyes.  No problem there.

On the way home I stop and buy the Alaway (14 dollars…. crazy for eye drops).  I get home and head to the bathroom to put them in.  Immediately I start tearing up with neon yellow tears.  I wipe them away with a tissue (which itself soaks up the tears and has neon yellow polka dots where I dabbed).  If it wasn’t so bizarre it would be kind of cool.  I searched online for Neon Yellow Tears and only find the band Yellow Tears.  At least I think they are a band.

I can’t imagine I”m the only person this has ever happened to, but no one else has had neon yellow tears that I’ve found on the internet.  I’ve found yellow tears (but not neon) linked with jaundice.  I’m fairly certain I don’t have jaundice, and these weren’t tinted yellow, they were neon yellow.

Thankfully when I put the Alaway in this morning the tears were normal and clear.  It was just a reaction between the Alaway and whatever anesthetic the eye doctor gave me, but man it was bizarre.

  1. This happened to me yesterday. I think one cause may be anemia, which I have. Calling the eye doc. Thanks for posting.

  2. Glad I could help. It really concerned me for a bit when I couldn’t find anything on Yellow Tears online. But after it went away by morning I was fine. I eventually had LASIK last year and haven’t had any problems with my eyes since.

Hope everything works out for you, and if you come back by please let me know what you found out.

  3. I cried neon yellow tears tonight. This has never happened to me before and it is a bit unsettling. Anybody have an insight into this?

  4. Deb,

I hope you got some help with this. Like I said in the post it cleared up on its own in about a day. I had trouble finding anything on this on the web and eventually got Lasik which has limited my eye doctor visits since.

If you find out any information please post it here. While being an old post it is one of the most visited ones on my site.

  5. I too have had an issue with neon yellow tears. I thought initially that it was just washing out some of the medications used after I had cataract surgery. I’ve had the yellow tears now for about 20 hours. I could not find anything on line about them. I could only find jaundice, and yellow mucus. My eye balls are not yellow, so it’s not jaundice. Do I need to be concerned. I have been taking turmeric, could that be the cause?

  6. Jen, I wish I had more to tell you about yellow tears. This was a one-time thing for me I have not had it happen since this incident. I find it very strange that this is the post I made on my blog that gets the most comments it lends itself to this not being avery common. I would follow up with an optometrist or at the very least a doctor if it’s something that is occurring regularly. if you do and you find out something please let me know. I’m really curious to find out why this occurs

  7. Hi, I am having somewhat a similar issue, however my neon yellow issue isnt limited to my tears. All of my fluid (except for my blood of course) is neon yellow.

I too have not found anything save this post. That being said, if you had neon yellow tears after your eye appointment where they put numbing drops in your eyes. Depending on the amount they used, you can have tinted tears up to 48 hours, depending on how dry your eyes are.

The only other lead I have is riboflavin, or B-2) if you are on this supplement it is a side effect.

As for me, I havent had any eye exams and my only B-supplement is a red B12 injection.

So any other ideas, would love to hear them🤔

  8. Wow. I was relieved when my neon yellow tears went away quickly. I can’t imagine having more than just tears that color. This wasn’t anything I discussed with my doctor (eye or otherwise) as it went away quickly for me and was a one time thing.

It did cause me to wonder what caused it or how common it was. In my case I think I can attribute it to my eye doctor visit combine with the eye drops he prescribed.

Judging by the response to this post, and how it continually shows up in searches for yellow tears it probably is not a common reaction. I wish I had taken a picture of my tears to have or keep up here. In my memories they were bright, bright neon yellow. I do think that talking with your doctor or eye doctor if this is reoccurring is the right course of action.

If you find anything out, please let us know.
