Pocket Watch
About a year after I graduated from Niagara, maybe a year and half I scoured eBay to find a pocket watch. Going back a year before I graduated, my friend Kevin graduated from college and for his graduation I bought him a pocket watch. He swore to return the favor when I graduated. When it was obvious that it fell through, I began looking for my own.
After a few months searching I came across one that I really wanted. It met my criteria. I wanted a watch that older (not a new one), a watch that was wind up (no battery operation), and it had to have a cover that opened when the latch button was pushed. It wasn’t easy to find. A lot of pocket watches are battery operated, and a lot of older watches are freaking expensive. But I found one. In Ukraine. The thing was, it was cheap too. Relatively. It cost around $40.00, around $50.00 with shipping.
It was an old Soviet era watch. I can’t find a date on it, but it has a stamped Russian Empire small state seal on it. I wore near every day. I freaking loved it. A lot. And then, after years of use, including being repaired once (thank you Jenna), I lost it. I couldn’t find it at all. And few months after losing it, I moved.
Since moving I had written off the pocket watch as gone forever. I’ve even looked at other watches, but I couldn’t find one of the same calibre, or even close to that price. AND TODAY I FOUND IT. In my old couch, way scrounched in back, in the crease under cushions and not visible even when cushions were removed. I was extatic. So I shall share some picturey goodness.
French Cinnamon Muffins
I downloaded the Betty Crocker cookbook for my iPhone. It was free and I was curious. First thing I looked up was French Cinnamon Muffins. These were my favorite thing to bake all through middle and high school. Essentially you make fantasticly delicious muffins, then dip them in melted butter and then in a cinnamon-sugar mix.
I never said they were good for you, just amazing.
An Extra 20
I showered last night. I now have an extra 20 minutes of free time this morning. Weird. Although I do like reading the news in the morning.
Candy, or not candy
Listening to NPR this I was a little shocked at what states are now defining as candy. States like Colorado and Washington are now going to tax candy as a way to fill in budget deficits.
In order to do this they first have to define what is candy; and the determining factor as to what is or is not candy, is flour. That’s right. Because Twix and Kit Kats have flour in them they are not candy. But a Snickers bar that is devoid of flour is candy. I find it the most bizarre arbitrary way to define something as candy.
However I am envious of the guy who gets to sit there and have candy sent to his office to see if it is taxable as “candy” or not. I wonder if he makes secret deals with his favorte candy company to be supplied candy for life if he deems it not taxable.
