40 Holes

I had a quick visit to the Hometown two weeks ago. It was great, I caught up with high school friends I hadn’t seen in years. Well not true, Shane and I catch up once a year around the holidays when we both visit family in the QBY. But Colin, I hadn’t seen him in person since Shane’s wedding a decade ago.

It was…. like high school. We chatted, Colin with so much energy it was hard to get a word in, Shane with irrelevant comments, me with my antagonism, and an overall a good time. Amazing how we all fell into our roles despite so much time apart.

Our chief objective was to dig up the time capsule we buried (along with Dan) 30 years ago. And we made a good attempt. We dug about 40 holes, about one to two feet deep each. Exactly where we thought the time capsule was buried. And we didn’t find it. Despite shovels, a metal detector and a lot of time.

Someone had dumped some trash – mostly metal wires, gravel and some plastic toys. Messed with our plans for the metal detector for help. Despite a both vague and specific note, I l wrote 30 years ago telling me where we buried it, we couldn’t find it. Colin and Shane appropriately made fun of me for the note, but I also laughed that I was the only that even thought of writing a note. So advantage AJ.

Now that we’ve started digging, Shane and I figure we can dig at our leisure whenever we are home and the ground is unfrozen. We left the 40 holes there for marking of where we dug. No one is likely to come upon it. We figure it must be deeper than we thought.

Maybe we can get at it before we all turn 50. Just over 2 years to go.
