Perry Nuclear Power Plant

Sam’s father used to work at the Perry Nuclear Power Plant. I thought it was pretty interesting that he was a nuclear engineer.

And while we have more coffee mugs than we know what to do with, when we were packing up her parents house this was just too interesting of a mug to not take.

It actually says Perry Nuclear Power Plant Emergency Response Team on the front of the atom symbol

Cups vs Glasses – Monday August 31

I told Sam recently that I think we need to rethink out dishware and glassware. Almost all of our cups are coffee related or alcohol related glasses. The few pint glasses are stolen from the Old Pink or Essex St. Pub in Buffalo over a decade ago. A ritual from when we used to close bars at 4am in Buffalo in our early – mid 20’s.

The coffee mugs are all either gifts or stolen (my cherished Denny’s mug!). The only one that purchased outright in the last few years is the NPR “Stand with the Facts” mug we got when we donated to our local NPR station this year.

We have 8 resuable Starbucks mugs that are all over 5 years old and are our go to travel drink mugs. We bought two for a dollar each and were gifted the rest as Christmas presents.

And we have 2 Burger King Star Trek mugs left out of a set of 4 I bought for Sam years ago, a Coca Cola Buffalo Bills glass and a big yellow plastic mug that is 2 decades old and carries with it a fantastic story from a college Spring Break field trip.

All that aside, we have 5 Tupperware kids cups that Sam’s mother held onto for us until Marceline came along and we are grateful to have and use everyday for Marceline.

Essentially I’m saying we have no set of drinking glasses. If more than one of us sit down for a meal at a table, we would have different cups in front of us. Not a huge deal, but also kind of weird. On a daily basis we don’t use any of these glasses except for coffee mugs and Marceline’s cup. We (Sam and I) have two water bottles we carry around with us and use regularly, and other than coffee and water we really don’t drink much (I know…. there is diet ginger ale bottle in the background – but that 2 liter is 2 weeks old now).

Not sure if that is normal or not, but whatever…. it is what it is.

In today’s big news, Marceline got out a bottle of Worcester sauce from our Lazy Susan this morning. Not a huge deal, she likes getting bottle out and lining them up on the kitchen floor, and none of the bottle she can reach are very big. But she did drop it on her big toe, which lead to more crying than we have had in a long time.

Look at her poor toe!

Today’s list –

  • Clean Living Room and Kitchen
  • Vacuum Basement
  • Scoop Kitty Litter
  • Change out Marceline’s books in the living room
  • Vacuum hallway rugs
  • Walk with Marceline (she likes walking down the road holding my hand)
  • Put away laundry

Denny’s vs Moustache Mug

For years when driving coffee at home, I would only drink it off my Denny’s mug.

I still this mug from a Denny’s in Queensbury one night after a summer full of many late night Denny’s trips. I loved that it had the Denny’s logo printed on it. I hope that restaurant forgives me, but it was a memorable summer, we even got kicked out of Denny’s once for playing cards there while drinking coffee and eating greasy appetizers.

Okay, not kicked out. But told we had to stop playing cards. According to the waitress who told us this, the manager said playing cards prevented ‘customer turnover.’ when we replied that there is only two other tables with customers in the entire restaurant and that it was near 2 a.m., she just shrugged her shoulders.

I read someplace that Denny’s doesn’t put the logo on their coffee mugs in there restaurants anymore because so many people stole them. You can buy Denny’s coffee mugs with a logos on them but not drink from them in restaurants. I don’t know if that’s true or not. I haven’t been to a Denny’s in probably 8 years. Regardless, this mug is probably 20 years old now and my favorite coffee mug.

Today, I used two different mug. My mustache mug was a gift from my mother-in-law several years ago. it is been my go-to coffee mug at work. Kids absolutely loved that it just had this really weird mustache face on the front of it.

At at home, Danny mug got me close to 4 full cups of coffee from my French press. that would take me well into the morning, and I feel like I’m drink a lot of coffee at that point.

At work, I would drink three to four mugs of the mustache mug of coffee each day. Sometimes more oh, because kids used to love making me coffee and I could never say no and tey asked.

However, the mustache mug only gets full twice from a French press, and not even to the top. I’m already done with my French press a coffee and it’s 9 am.

Itit does seem to illustrate the difference in the amount of coffee I drank at work versus the amount of coffee I drink at home. Since I’m going to be staying home for the next year, do I resort to the mustache mug and drink from that knowing I’ll drink more coffee comparable to what I drink at work or do I stick to the Denny’s mug which is my traditional mug at home.

I’m probably going to fall back to the Denny’s mug just because I enjoy drinking out of that mug so much more than the mustache mug. I feel like the mustache mug is for sure, in the Denny’s mug is just comfort.

The only 2 mugs that matter…

I have a bazillion coffee mugs.  that’s an actual number not an exaggeration.

I’ve thought about getting the actual number down to a hearty 6 maybe.  I can’t ever see needing more than 6.  Of course, those 6 don’t include….

THE ONLY TWO MUGS THAT MATTER!!!!!

Lots of emphasis there.

The only two mugs that matter are my Denny’s mug and my PRS mug.  These are my mugs.  I don’t get made when someone else uses them, but I would prefer, maybe heavily prefer, that no one else uses them but me.  They both have different uses.

Denny's

Denny’s Mug

I stole this mug from a Denny’s in Queensbury.  It happened during one fateful summer where I made numerous late night Denny’s trips with Kevin, Reggie, Shane, and Colin.  I don’t really need to add the ‘late night’ preface there, I’m pretty sure no one ever goes to Denny’s at other times.   At least we didn’t then.

It was the time period where I had actually been made fun of at college by Keifer because 90% of the stories I told started with “At 2 am” because we all worked that summer and did nothing but play frisbee and go to Denny’s.  Or maybe I’m combining summers.  Whatever.  Your memory is no better than mine.

Regardless of my memory, I stole this Denny’s mug.  And when I make a cup of coffee in the morning, I drink from my Denny’s mug.  It’s speckled, authentic, and awesome.  And it was stolen from Denny’s.  By my hands, because I wanted it, would cherish it, and use it all the time.  I will not, will not, let anyone else use it.  It’s mine.  But that’s not true, Sam is envious of it, and sneaks it to use when I’m not around.  I suppose I’m ok with that.  But guests, sorry, get your own if you can.

PRS Mug

PRS Mug

Years ago (like 5) Josh ‘the man’ Wallens lived near Baltimore and worked at PRS. PRS is Paul Reed Smith Guitars.  It was pretty awesome.  He worked hard to get there and had the job for a few years before the economy left him without steady employment.

But that first year Josh sent me a PRS mug and shirt.  I still wear the shirt all the time.  Love it.  But the mug, I saw how it could become lost among the masses of coffee mugs I already had unless I gave it the status it deserves.  So it became my wine mug.

When I drink wine at home, I drink it out of the PRS Mug.  It is fantastic.  It has this unique little peak, a pointy edge at the top of the handle, where my thumb continually rubs against it while I use it.  Makes it special and unique.  We had guests once and one of them, despite being told not too, used PRS to drink wine out of.  I was pretty livid.  Tried not to be.  Kept it together.  But when he joked about stealing it I told him he wouldn’t make it out the door with losing the hand that was holding it.

Its a fantastic mug.  Period.  Nothing else to say about it.  It sits up in the liquor cabinet away from all the other coffee mugs reveling in its prestige.  It deserves it.
