Doorbell Etiquette

While growing up I never heard the doorbell.  Or at least not often.  I grew up in a town, and in particular my mother ran a daycare out of our house.  The doorbell was also second to knocking.  Whenever I went anywhere, I would always knock several times before ringing the doorbell as a last result.

I currently working in a preschool.  The front door is locked throughout the day and  my classroom is closest to the door.  Whenever someone comes to the door and presses the doorbell, it rings in my classroom.  I have to get up from whatever I’m doing and walk across the classroom into the hall and press the buzzer to let them in.  In itself this an annoying task, but the amount of times people press a doorbell is astounding.

I would assume, and hope general population hopefully agrees with me, that you press the doorbell in one or two moderate spurts and then wait, 30 seconds, 40 seconds or so before pressing it again.  At work it seems that’s not what people are uses to.  I get the 15 second presses of the doorbell almost daily.  Or the repetitive pressing of the doorbell in short quick bursts over and over again ad nauseam.  Its relentless.  And makes me hate all doorbells.  I cringe when I hear it.  I honestly believe the doorbell itself hates me and steals some of my soul every  time someone presses it.
